Founded in 1989 by Joan Lawrence, Jack Collins, Vickie Cammack and Al Etmanski, PLAN (Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network) is a family-led organization that has aspired to help families with disabilities, secure their financial future. Since their inception, PLAN has worked tirelessly to answer one pertinent question: “Who will take care of our children when we are gone?”
PLAN began when a small group of parents gathered to consider how they could best support their son or daughter with a disability. These courageous parents acknowledged that one day they would need to pass on the responsibility for the care of their son or daughter to someone else, but the question was “who?” For those who have a child or a relative with a disability this question – “Who will take care of our children when we are gone?” is incredibly present on a daily basis. The families who established PLAN, searched determinedly to discover solutions for securing a positive future for loved ones with disabilities.
Over time, the members of PLAN soon discovered that focusing on an encouraging future not only helped change the present for both loved one and family, but it also gave direction and purpose to the larger family unit and ultimately surrounding community itself; that planning for the future, changes the present. From networking resources and a diverse range of seminars (both telephone and in-person) to popular literature and public forums on their website, PLAN is going far above and beyond the call of duty by helping families with disabilities realize and fully attain a ‘good life’.
PLAN is an International, family-led organization, that has provided a successful model for over 40 family-led organizations across the world. Currently, it is helping14,000 families across Canada, with more than 130 established lifetime networks.
